What is a capacitor?

The capacitor in a circuit charges up when the power is supplied to the circuit. Alternatively, the capacitor discharges its electrical charge when the current supply in the circuit is turned off. Purpose of the capacitor in ceiling fan
The fans work on single phase motors. In single phase motor, the starting capacitor is needed to reverse the phase angle of the current flowing in the windings. The change in the phase angles of the current results in an imbalance in the motor windings and prompts the fan to start up. In the absence of the capacitor, this imbalance would be missing and the motor of the fan would not start.
Ceiling fans have two windings – the starting winding and the running winding. The capacitor in the circuit is connected in series with the starting winding. Thus the capacitor gives the required starting torque to the induction motor to start up. The purpose of using a capacitor in a ceiling fan is similar to that of establishing a magnetic field. Once the rotating magnetic field is set up the motor of the fan starts running and keeps running. The capacitor creates a field which is 90 degree leading to the main field of the motor and thus, gives a rotating effect to the motor of the fan.
Therefore the main purpose of using a capacitor in the motor of the fan is to provide the required phase shift. It thus appears that the fan is working on a multiphase system.
